about

GRRRL is an electronic music collaboration between revolutionary women, brought together by In Place Of War (IPOW), a global organisation that supports artistic creativity in places of
conflict as a tool for positive change.
Together, these eight influential artists from Brazil, Ghana,
Zimbabwe, Venezuela, South Africa, Bangladesh and the UK have worked with Laima Leyton
(Mixhell/Soulwax) to create a studio and touring project that fuses together sounds of dark techno, ghetto bass, hip hop, dancehall, reggae, soul and electronica, and tells their collective
stories, demonstrating how artistic creativity can conquer conflict.
The band formed as recently as August 2017. After a month sharing ideas online, the GRRRL
artists physically came together in London and collaborated over 4 intense rehearsal days
where they created a new body of work which was previewed to a packed audience at London’s
Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, which was followed by a feature in The Huffington Post, ‘Meet
GRRRL: The All Female International Band Using Music To Create Change.’, and saw them go
on to headline Freedom Festival Hull and Greenbelt Festival, play sold out shows in London and
Manchester, before being voted Best Live Act of Shambala Festival 2017.
GRRRL’s debut single is “Woyale”, is released on April 6 th , taken from their debut EP, released
June 1 st , on a joint venture between Mixhell’s reactivated label Delayed, and In Place Of War’s
Barrio Electric label.
‘Woyale is triumphant chant celebrating and claiming one's identity in a conflicting world. The
idea of using expressive syllables as opposed to an existing language, allows the listener to
personalise the meaning of the music in a deeper and more subjective way with the original
theme of the song making an appearance in a suggestive manner. Woyale imagines a world
where people from all corners of the world are free to be and live as their authentic selves’ -
